The system actively monitors driver attention through a small camera on the steering column that tracks eye movement and head position. 

How Does Super Cruise® Work on Compatible GMC Models? 

Super Cruise® relies on a precisely mapped network of highways across the United States and Canada. When you’re on a compatible road and conditions are met, the Super Cruise® symbol illuminates on the instrument cluster. Press that button, the light bar turns green, and hands-free driving is actively engaged. You’re ready to remove your hands from the wheel! 

From there, the vehicle handles steering, acceleration, and braking within its lane. If the system detects that you’re not paying attention, it will prompt you to refocus — first with a flashing green light bar, then with a flashing red light bar and audible beeps or seat vibration. If all alerts are ignored, the vehicle will slow and eventually brake to a stop, and an Emergency-Certified OnStar® Advisor will be prompted to call the vehicle. 

Super Cruise® is available on several 2026 GMC models. The GMC Sierra 1500’s Denali Ultimate trim is equipped with Super Cruise® as standard, and it’s available as an upgrade on the Denali trim. The GMC Sierra EV includes it standard on both the AT4 and Denali trims. 

What Makes the 2026 Version Different? 

The 2026 GMC safety features surrounding Super Cruise® continue to build on earlier versions with expanded compatible-road coverage and enhanced driver assistance integration. Super Cruise® now works on more than 500,000 miles of compatible roads across North America.  

For 2026, the system also works in conjunction with other available driver assistance technologies, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Lane Keep Assist. It’s also paired with over-the-air map updates, so the system can improve and expand its highway coverage without requiring a dealership visit. 

The light bar on the steering wheel remains one of the most intuitive parts of the experience. It communicates system status at a glance — green when Super Cruise® is active, white when the system is available, and red when driver attention is required. It’s a small detail, but it makes the technology feel approachable rather than overwhelming.
